He hadn't meant to startle Brian, oops. He shoots him an apologetic look, "sorry, sorry," and follows the fox over to the spider to investigate. And by investigate I mean he gets down on all fours next to the fox and leans in real close to the spider. This is without a doubt the stupidest Peter has ever looked in his life, just sayin'.

"This is insane and I can't believe I'm talking to a spider, but did you just scream at me?"

It seems to answer affirmatively, because Peter hops up and turns back to Brian, pointing at the spider, "it was the-- that-- the spider! This thing is talking to me, man!"
