He nods slowly in understanding. When looking back on his life now, he has a view of his village that is perhaps better than it actually was, because it was cut short and he never got the chance to return. He would lie if he tried to claim that he'd never felt trapped too. Not so much by the prohibition to move outside of the valley, but by the hovering uncertainty and anxiety caused by the expansion of the colonists and what it meant for their task to guard the sacred site. It was always there.

What precisely made Jacob feel trapped doesn't really matter. It's unpleasant.

"Me too. I did not think the clan mother would let me leave, because my village was always told to not fight against the injustices our people had to endure. That was not our task. Even after the village was burnt, we were not to retaliate. It was difficult for me to accept."

He's certain he wasn't the only one. He wasn't the only one to lose family, to lose someone so important. But everyone trusted Oiá:ner.
