He's getting an idea of the shape of things in Anchor from that, but he thinks that once this stupid festival is over with, he'll have to go seeking out this Cole.
When he sees a blond boy talking to a tree, he doesn't realize at first that he's met him, though the sight of it does make him pause and pay attention. While there had been plenty of mages back home in Keuruu who could see spirits and communicate with them, he's run into almost nobody who can do that here, and this looks very much like that. So he approaches cautiously, his head tilted in curiosity, and addresses the boy when he looks like he's having a break in conversation with the tree.
"The tree's spirit is strong. Does it seem alright to you?"
